Area and Neighbourhood Working in South Tyneside

South Tyneside Council applies community development through its 'Community Action Team'. As part of Culture and Neighbourhoods, the team develops approaches to improving the quality of life for residents in the most deprived areas. Known as 'priority neighbourhoods', action plans have been developed using participatory appraisal to identify what are the main issues for local people. These extensive consultations have been carried out by team members working together with residents, other agencies and Northumbria University.

The team is split into three geographical areas that match the Council's Community Area Forum structure:

  • East Shields/ Boldon, Cleadon, & Whitburn
  • Jarrow and Hebburn
  • Riverside and West Shields

Within the team, Community Partnerships Officers take the lead in managing and coordinating action plans, neighbourhood partnerships and providing community development support to community groups and individuals. In addition, there are team members specialising in community safety or health who take a broader area based approach.
